Death’s door is a decent isometric melee game where you play as a crow employed as a grim reaper; whos task is to collect souls. The narrative of the game centres around the theme of death. The presentation is the games biggest strength, the visuals, the audio and especially the soundtracks are excellent. The major problem with the game is that the combat is very basic, and very repetitive while it is also punishing. You play the game because it looks good, and not because the gameplay is compelling.
The game’s presentation is very good. I love the fantastic visuals of this game. The audio is enjoyable as well, and the soundtrack is fantastic. Unfortunately I seem to be suffering from motion sickness when I play this game. I have not been able to figure out precisely what triggers it in this game, but it did ruin a lot of the experience for me, and stopped me from being able to immerse myself into the game.
The combat is a basic melee system that is implemented fairly well. However the game lacks complexity in both the combat mechanics and enemy design in order to make it interesting. The game is at the same time quite punishing if you die, and you are frequently set back 10 minutes if you fail. This combination creates a game that is “difficult” because you are bored to death. If you don’t mind playing with a basic and punishing combat system you will enjoy the game based on how good the presentation is.
